The designation of the engine is RC211V, so called because it's the first new 4-stroke engine of the 21st century. It's a 5-cylinder V configuration (3 front, 2 rear) with fuel injection.

The last Honda racing 5 cylinder bike was called the RC149, ridden by Luigi Taveri in 1966.
